AR Rahman gets two Oscar awards for Slumdog

Music maestro AR Rahman brought laurels to the country with Oscar awards in two categories--Best Original Music Score and Best Song, as Slumdog Millionaire got eight awards.

The Indian music composer said 'God is great' in his mother tongue, Tamil, after accepting the award. He recalled a line from the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Deewar, 'Mere paas maa hai' ( I have mother) to thank his mother for her blessings.

Allah Rakha Rahman, who was born a Hindu and later converted to Islam under the influence of a Sufi Saint, said the film was about hope and optimism. "All my life I had this choice to make and I chose love".

He shares the award for best original song 'Jai Ho' with lyricist Gulzar. In all, the movie was nominated for ten awards and swept the function by bagging eight Oscar awards.

Danny Boyle got the award for Best Director and Resul Pookutty was chosen for Best Sound Mixing, sharing it with Ian Tapp and Richar Pryke. Pookutty dedicated the award to his country (India).

Incidentally, Pookutty is also a Muslim while Gulzar is a Sikh. The success of Slumdog Millionaire is also a reflection of the celebration of India's diversity. The 39 minute documentary Smile Pinki also won Oscar award.
