The images of a child held above the ground by her hair by a policeman, with another policeman mercilessly beating her publicly, shocked the nation on Monday.
The girl was kept suspended by a policeman who had clutched her hair in his fists and held are above the ground. Her shrieks fell on deaf years. The Etawah police's brutal act in full public view, horrified the country.
The images hit the TV channels later in the night. The girl had apparently been accused of theft. Inspector CB Singh was hitting the child while constable SL Yadav had grabbed her hair as she dangled in the air.
The incident occurred near Jaswant Nagar in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh (UP), the most populous state in the Northern region of the country. UP police have been accused of torture and brutal behaviour in the past.
A senior engineer was recently killed by a public representative (MLA) who had thrown him dead in the police station and the officials hadn't taken action until TV channels beamed the images. That incident had occurred in neighbouring Auraiya district.
Later in the night, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Etawah ordered suspension of the inspector and action against the constable involved in inhuman act. He ordered an inquiry also.
