Maoists kill 15 policemen in Maharashtra

Naxalites killed a police party comprising 15 personnel in an ambush in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on Sunday. The ultra-leftists have a strong presence in Gadchiroli.

The attack took place near Madke forest village in Dhanora. Apparently, the Maoists were aware of the movement of police and as soon as the patrolling party arrived, they were fired at.

This is one of the biggest attacks on police in terms of casualties in recent times. One sub-inspector and 14 constables died in the firing. Several other policemen and guards were injured.

There was no information about any Naxal getting injured. Chief Minister Ashok Chavan vowed tough action on Naxalites. The Home Minister Jayant Patil has rushed to Gadchiroli, which is on the border of Chhattisgarh.

Naxalites managed to take away arms and ammunitions including AK 47 rifles. The police suspect that the recent arrest of two dalam commanders may have prompted the Naxalites to take revenge.
