The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday arrested a DSP for his role during the attack on Gulbarg society. More police officials are likely to be arrested soon.
The SIT arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) KG Erda, who is currently posted at Valsad. Erda has been arrested for his allegedly biased role when the mobs had attacked Gulbarg society in Ahmedabad during the Gujarat riots.
Former Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Ehsan Jafri was amongst the 38 persons who had been killed in the violent attack by Hindu mobs on the locality in the Gujarat riots (2002).
SIT head RK Raghavan confirmed the arrest though he refused to divulge the exact charges against the arrested official. Erda, was an inspector at Meghani Nagar police station, and had alleged taken no action to prevent the rioting.
Over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the riots in Gujarat and the BJP-ruled state government was accused of giving a long rope to the rioters. Even leaders of the party were involved in instigating the mobs.
The SIT has been constituted on Supreme Court order. Erda has been arrested for dereliction of duty and tampering of evidences. Many other officials are likely to be arrested soon, hinted the SIT officers probing the riot cases.
