BJP legislator and a minister in Gujarat government, Mayaben Kodnani, is facing heat after the Special Investigative Team (SIT) chargesheeted her for instigating mass murders.
The Congress leaders met Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma and submitted a memorandum to him urging him to take action against the MLA. Sharma has assured the delegation that he would take all steps within his jurisdiction to ensure action.
Kodnani is charged of provoking the mob to attack Muslim houses in Naroda Patia in Ahmedabad. SIT had made Kodnani and VHP leader Jaideep Patel accused in the mass murders during the post-Godhra riots.
The state government affidavit in the court also supports the SIT charge sheet. A number of witnesses told the team that Kodnani was carrying a gun and had distributed swords among the riotous mob.
Kodnani, who is a practicing doctor, had emerged as the most militant face of Hindutva during the carnage that saw nearly 2,000 persons, mostly Muslims dead, in killings.
She had sought anticipatory bail from a local court. Later the SIT approached the High Court which served notice to Kodnani. The date for the hearing has been fixed on March 2.
The state government hasn't dropped her from ministry but there are indications that she may face the axe in coming days. The Governor's assurance to Congress delegation also hints that she could be removed.
