Zardari bows to Nawaz Sharif, CJ to be reinstated

Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari has bowed to mounting public pressure and agreed to reinstate Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry after Nawaz Sharif began his long march.

The crisis was diffused after Zardari announced on Monday that deposed Supreme Court Judge Iftikhar Chaudhary would be back. Former President Pervez Musharraf had dismissed Chaudhary during the emergency in 2007.

With Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today declaring that all the sacked judges would be reinstated along with the Chief Justice (CJ), the former PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif who had defied the house arrest orders, cancelled his long march.

Chaudhry will take over as Chief Justice on March 21, the same day incumbent Justice Abdul Hamid Dogar retires. The government has also agreed for an appeal against the court order barring Sharif and his brother Shahbaz from contesting elections.
