A Sikh journalist who was upset over the clean-chit to Jagdish Tytler in the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, hurled his shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram in Delhi.
The journalist, Jarnail Singh, who works with Dainik Jagran, threw the shoe in Chidambaram's direction however it didn't hit the minister. Singh was arrested and taken into custody. He now faces a possible three year sentence.
Singh, a journalist with a Hindi daily, had asked a question about CBI's clean-chit to Tytler. But when Chidambaram avoided the query, Singh took off his shoe and threw it.
The Home Minister asked the staff to take the scribe away but directed them to treat him gently. Chidambaram later said that he had fogiven Singh. He also asked the other journalists to not let the incident hijack the entire press conference.
The Congress party has issued a statement pardoning the journalist. The incident has come barely months after Iraqi journalist Muntadhar Al Zaidi had flung his shoe at US president George W Bush during the latter's visit to Iraq.
