The Naxalites triggered a landmine blast causing the death of 12 policemen and a civilian in Dhamtari district in Maoist-infested Chhattisgarh on Monday.
The landmine blast targeted a police vehicle in Risgaon village of Dhamtari, officials said. The police party was on way towards Kanker in Bastar when it was blown up.
The incident occurred in dense forests and that made relief operations even more difficult. The critically injured policemen were sent to the state capital, Raipur, by a helicopter.
As many as 36 police jawans have been killed by the left-wing militants in Chhattisgarh in a month. Earlier this month 11 policemen were killed in Dantewada in the souther part of the state.
