Eight held for attack on army convoy in Tamil Nadu

May 4, 2009

A day after supporters of the Liberation Tigers for Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had attacked army trucks in Coimbatore, the police have arrested eight persons for the incident.

The protesters had attacked the Indian army convoy as they felt it was taking arms and ammunition for the Sri Lankan government that has launched a military offensive against LTTE in the island nation.

Activists of MDMK and Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (PDK) had stopped the trucks carrying army personnel, raised slogans and hurled stones at the convoy. Later a truck was set on fire.

The incident had occurred near Nilambur. The convoy had 80 trucks and it was on way from Hyderabad to Maddukkarai regiment. The protesters had dragged drivers out of the vehicles, smashed the window glasses and deflated tyres. All the arrested PDK activists were produced in the court today and send to judicial custody.
