Muslim schoolboy can sport beard: Supreme Court

The Apex court has questioned the decision of a missionary-run school to expel a Muslim student for sporting beard. The school has been directed to re-admit the boy.

The divisional bench of Justice BN Agarwal and Justice JS Singhvi said that the Nirmala Convent School authorities' decision to expel the student was ridiculous. The minority (Christian) un-aided school is located in Sironj in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh.

The court said that tomorrow a Sikh student will not be able to sport beard or a boy could be asked that he is not fair-complexioned. The boy, Mohammad Salim, was a student of Xth standard in the school.

His counsel had filed a review petition. Earlier, a SC bench had rejected the plea of the boy. But the observations of the judge, Markandeya Katju, about 'Talibanisation' had caused a controversy.
