'Probe Hemant Karkare's death during 26/11 Mumbai terror strike'

Eminent citizens demanded a judicial probe into the death of former ATS chief Hemant Karkare on the anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes.

The conference was organised at India Islamic Centre in New Delhi. Observing the anniversary of November 26 as 'Hemant Karkare's martyrdom day', the speakers said that Karkare was unravelling the involvement of right-wing terrorists in the bomb blasts.

The All India United Muslim Morcha (AIUMM) organised the conference that was attended by Ved Pratap Vaidik, Dr Zafarul Islam, Ejaz Ali and leading intellectuals belonging to different communities.

Ejaz Ali said that Karkare was getting threats from fanatics who were unhappy with him because he was arresting the Hindutva extremists involved in blasts in Nanded, Samjhauta Express, Malegaon and other places.

"The attack on Mumbai occurred in front of our eyes and brave police officials including Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar achieved martyrdom. There is need for a judicial inquiry. A five-member bench comprising Supreme Court judges must probe the entire incident", he said.

Citing the example of the album released by former police commissioner YP Singh and the book written by retired IPS officer SM Mushrif 'Who killed Karkare' or 'Karkare ko kisne mara', the speakers sought a probe. The participants demanded installation of statues of Karkare and his other policemen who gave up lives in the line of duty.

Opposing oath in Hindi, MNS MLAs beat Abu Azmi

The Maharashtra Assembly witnessed unruly scenes when MNS MLAs beat up Samajwadi Party's Abu Asim Azmi for taking oath in Hindi instead of Marathi.

Azmi was hit by the MNS legislators who reached the well of the House and attacked the SP leader. They were raising slogans in support of Marathi as they kicked and abused Azmi.

The unprecedented scenes were shown on television, outraging millions, as Azmi was attacked for taking oath in the national language, Hindi, instead of the state language, Marathi.

Later speaking to media persons Azmi said that he had earlier said that he respected Marathi but would take oath in Hindi. There was condemnation of MNS action from all parts of the society.
