Bukhari lambasts Congress at Muslim convention

Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Ahmed Bukhari, gave a call of unity to Muslim leaders and came down heavily on Congress. He urged Muslims to stay away from the party in UP.

Addressing the first conclave of the recently floated non-political platform Majlis-e-Amal at Lucknow, Bukhari also criticised BSP leader Mayawati and said that though she initiated schemes for uplift of Dalits, the Muslims of Uttar Pradesh remained out of her developmental vision.

He said that lack of unity among Muslim leaders and parties was hurting the community. He gave examples of extra-judicial killings of Ishrat Jahan and Sohrabuddin to suggest that the Muslims were targeted wrongfully but there was not a proper response to such institutionalised bias in the system.

Bukhari said that media and human rights activists raised the issue of injustice with Ruchika Gehrotra, victim of sexual abuse by a former DGP, but they don't speak in the same manner for Muslim women like Bilquees Bano who lost their entire families in Gujarat's anti-Muslim riots.
