Pakistan election results 2013: Nawaz Sharif's PML-N wins, Imran Khan's PTI at second place with PPP behind
PML-N may get a simple majority on its own. Imran Khan's Tehrik-e-Insaf that was expected to do much better appeared to be behind PMLN. However, Khan won the election and his party seemed poised to win over 37 seats.
The worst performance was that of the incumbent Pakistan People's Party (PPP). It appeared to get almost 35 seats as trends indicated after 2 am at night. The counting was on but the final tally may not be too different from the current scenario.
The MQM was leading in eight places. Jamat and other groups did no better either. The ANP had no lead while the independents were leading the rest. Though Nawaz Sharif declared his party as victorious, the formal results were yet to be announced. He is likely to be the next Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The elections were held for the 272 member national assembly. Despite threat of Taliban, Pakistanis came out to vote in large numbers. The results were a setback for the ruling PPP. The polls were historic as it was the first time a civilian government had completed term and elections were held for the next government.
